The Best Flea and Tick Medicine for Dogs with Skin Allergies

Dog with sad eyes lying on the floor

You’ve got me. I have itchy skin. It gets dry and flaky depending on the weather and especially if I steal a bunch of my mom’s human food. Which makes finding an appropriate flea and tick medicine for my dog allergies a bit difficult.

I get the worst phase of my allergies around spring time. Last year was exceptionally bad for me. My lips swelled up, I had yeast in between my paw pads, and my eyes were extremely watery. I actually wrote a review on a particular CBD oil product I used during this time that helped me tremendously.

I’ll link it here if you’re at all curious.

The best flea and tick medicine to use on dogs with skin allergies is drops without any harsh chemicals and ones that are made up of the following natural ingredients:

  • Clove
  • Thyme
  • Cinnamon

DISCLAIMER: It’s important to note that natural oils or ingredients used to repel fleas and ticks on your dog can also be extremely toxic to them if ingested. Use caution and proper dosages every single time. Consult your veterinarian if complications arise.

The Best Flea and Tick Option for Your Dog with Skin Allergies

Let’s not bury the lead here. I want to go ahead and let you know my favorite and the one that has helped me the most, personally.

Drum roll, please…

Natural Care Flea and Tick Drops – Topical Treatment for Dogs

This stuff is amazing. I am NOT getting paid to say this – it’s just that my experience with this magic back juice it too good to keep to myself. I’ve linked it above in case you want to check it out.

I suffer from super sensitive skin. This flea repellent has, hands down, been the most effective natural product. No ticks, no fleas, no mosquitoes, no dry skin, no lethargy, no ‘itchies’.

My humans also love the natural repellant because they say it makes me smell like Christmas. I love Christmas. Who’s with me? Show of paws.

Why Use Natural Flea Control On Your Dog?

It goes without saying that any dog who suffers from sensitive skin and seasonal allergies should try to stay away from any harsh medicinal chemicals found in general flea and tick ointments. that could potentially dry their skin out and irritate the surface even more.

These chemical-based flea and tick products can also have serious side effects – both long and short term. Those side effects include:

  • Skin irritation / inflammation
  • Lethargy (very common)
  • Seizures
  • Organ Damage
  • Sometimes even death

Um. Yeah, excuse me?

DEATH???

That’s going to be a hard no from me.

Prior to finding these natural drops, we were using a more expensive topical medical application. It would make me feel sick and tired for about a day.

This is reason enough for me to switch to more natural resources. You may also want to consider natural flea and tick medicines if you have any children living in the house with you.

It’s easy for the chemicals to transfer to their hands when your child is petting your dog. Guess where their hands go next? Yep. Their mouths. Not a good thing in this case.

What’s In Your Dogs Diet

Aside from removing chemicals from your dogs monthly treatments, another really important place to look if your dog has skin allergies is their food intake.

What does their diet look like?

What foods are they predominantly consuming?

Our diets play an integral role in the overall health and well-being of our skin and coat.

If your dog suffers from sensitive skin issues, don’t just worry about the flea and tick treatments – take it a step further. Take a look at the ingredient list on the back of their food bag. Any byproducts? Unnecessary additives? Get rid of it.

Take a look at why you should actually be cooking from your dog, here.

My Opinion

This is all opinion derived. I’m one of the smartest dogs, if not the smartest dog I’ve ever met. But this is all still my opinion compiled from ’empirical personal experience’ data. That’s a thing. I promise.

After all, the best teacher is experience, right?

When dealing with your dog’s allergies or any skin issues for that matter, you must initiate the research with your dog’s vet. They will help lead you in the right direction.

Be sure to ask them about any natural options you could use that they can recommend. You will be surprised at the list you begin to compile.

Conclusion

If you decide to go this route for your dog with sensitive skin, perhaps try a small amount in a controlled area at first to ensure your dog doesn’t experience any adverse reactions to any of the ingredients.

The cloves and clove oil, in particular can be a bit extreme for some and in some cases. Seeing as this is the main player in alternative flea treatments, its important to understand the possible safety issues. Tread with caution if you’ve never used it as an ingredient in flea and tick topical drops before.

Give it a day and you should be in the clear.

I’ve been using the Natural Care brand for over a year now. It has been one of the best changes that my human has ever made for me. As I briefly mentioned above, the old flea medicine made me feel nauseous and exceptionally tired for an entire day. The chemicals in there were super intense. The new one doesn’t do that to me at all.

Just understand that there are always alternative options. Be willing to do your due diligence when it comes to treatments and how your dog may react to the change up.

Why Does My Dog Have Dandruff?

Your dog’s dandruff is a symptom of an underlying skin or coat issue related to seasonal allergies, weather, infections, and rashes.

Dandruff could also be attributed to other health and/or environmental factors such as dry climate or abrupt climate change due to a relocation.

Dandruff symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Excessive itching
  • Visible white flakes on top of your dog’s fur
  • Red irritated or inflamed skin
  • Strange smell (common with bacteria infections)
  • Dry weather

I linked the blog I previously wrote in the main article above and full disclosure, the dandruff topic was narrowed down to a cocker spaniel but the article covers the issues on a comprehensive scale suitable for all dog breeds.

Does CBD Oil Help With Dog Allergies?

CBD oil has anti-inflammatory benefits that can help relieve your dog’s dermatitis and other symptoms directly associated with seasonal allergies.

Note: If your dog’s allergic reaction is due to food, bugs, or any other direct force, it’s crucial that you change their diets and / or remove the irritant. CBD oil cannot fix a problem that you neglect.

For allergies, CBD oil works best if ingested by your dog. Either squirt the recommended dosage directly in their mouths or add it to their breakfast bowl each morning.

For skin irritations, cuts, scrapes, or rashes, you can apply the CBD oil directly to the irritated area. Start with small topical drops and gently rub in and around the infected area.

Disclaimer: As always, consult your vet before introducing CBD oil to your dog in any capacity.
