How it works

Three steps between curiosity and certainty

No accounts, no forms, no food databases to search through. Point, scan, know.

1

Snap

Analyse a whole bowl or scan a single food item β€” a meal, a label, a leftover, anything.

2

Scan

AI identifies every ingredient in the frame β€” even mixed meals β€” and scores the bowl out of 10.

3

Verdict

Each ingredient gets a clear call β€” safe, caution, or toxic β€” with what it does and how much is okay.

Features

Built around one job: keeping your dog safe, happy and healthy

Safety net

A toxin floor that can't be argued with

Known toxins β€” grapes, onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, cooked bones, alcohol β€” are caught by a deterministic safety layer that overrides everything else. The AI can be clever; the floor is absolute.

Analyse Bowl

Real meals aren't single ingredients. Scan the whole bowl, get a score out of 10, and see a verdict on every component β€” not just the obvious ones.

Scan a Food Item

One food, one photo, one clear answer β€” with what it does for your dog and how much is okay.

Can My Dog? β€” just ask

Type it or tap to speak: "Can my dog have broccoli?" gets a straight answer with the why and the how-much.

Day summary

Every bowl and snack counts toward the day β€” calories, protein, antioxidants, omega-3, calcium and more, checked against what your dog actually needs.

Weight & body tracking

Log weight over time and see it against your vet-set target, with gentle guidance β€” never crash-diet advice β€” tuned to your dog's age.

Our philosophy

We don't hate kibble, but…

But we all know it doesn't represent optimal nutrition for dogs. Kibble is a highly processed product and, in our view, falls far short of the quality and diversity of nutrients found in fresh, natural foods.

Kibble can keep a dog alive. Our goal is to help dog owners move beyond survival β€” toward better nutrition, better health, and a better quality of life for their dogs. In many cases, fresher and more natural food isn't even more expensive than premium kibble.

That's the job CanMyDog was built for: it answers your questions about dog nutrition, food safety and well-being, and it monitors and evaluates your dog's nutrition daily and weekly β€” so healthier habits get easier to build over time.

We don't sell food. We don't sell any products. Just a tool β€” built to help you decide and make great choices for your dog.

What we believe

Real food, real reasoning

A few simple principles guide every answer CanMyDog gives β€” the same common sense that's fed dogs well for thousands of years.

Real food, the right mix

Dogs thrive on varied, natural food β€” meat, fish, eggs, organs, bones, fruit and veg. A simple reference bowl: mostly meat, some organs and connective tissue, a little fruit and veg, plus omega-3, calcium and hydration. We help you choose it well; we never replace your vet.

Made for the decider

For the owner who looks at food and asks "is this good for my dog?" We meet you with reasoning, not a rulebook β€” answering the same three things every time: is it good, how much, and what it actually does for your dog.

Simple rules, longer life

Variety, balance over time (not every single meal), and the right amount of calories β€” that's the foundation. And a long life comes from the basics: healthy weight, muscle, daily activity, protein, omega-3 and dental health β€” not superfoods or trends.

Move first, then chew

Exercise before the meal, then eat, then rest β€” the natural order, and the way dogs feel their best. And crunchy, work-to-eat food beats soft mush: it supports digestion, cleaner teeth and calmer, slower eating.

The origin story

Leelah, the Collie–Australian cattle dog mix who inspired CanMyDog, offering a paw to the camera
"I built this for Leelah β€” my Collie–Australian cattle dog mix β€” because 'Can my dog eat this?' was a daily search for me for many years. I think it can benefit everybody from now on."

FAQ

Good questions, straight answers

Is this a replacement for my vet?

No, and it never will be. CanMyDog helps you make informed everyday decisions and catch dangers early. If your dog has eaten something toxic or shows any symptoms, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison control hotline immediately.

How accurate is the AI?

The AI is good at identifying foods and explaining them β€” but we don't rely on it alone for the dangerous stuff. Known toxins are caught by a separate, deterministic safety layer that always wins. Belt and suspenders.

Do I need an account?

No. Your dog's profile and scan history live on your device. There's nothing to sign up for.

What happens to my photos?

Only after you agree, photos are sent securely to our server and Anthropic's Claude AI to generate your verdict. Our servers don't store them; Anthropic deletes them within 30 days and doesn't use them to train its AI. They are never sold or used for ads. See the privacy policy for full details.

Does it work for puppies?

Food safety verdicts, yes. Body-condition assessments are deliberately disabled for dogs under one year β€” growing bodies follow different rules, and that call belongs to your vet.

If your dog has eaten something dangerous, act now β€” call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. CanMyDog provides natural, ancestral guidance and is not veterinary advice.
